COMEDY: The Chaser’s SPIN

The federal election campaign is ripe for satire with The Chaser dedicating a new live show to the foibles of politics. Irfan Yusuf went along to the Enmore Theatre in Sydney’s inner-west hoping for a laugh, or two, or three.

In the late 1990’s I found myself working in a law firm in Balmain, a trendy suburb in the inner west of Sydney. One afternoon I walked into the building where my office was located and noticed a pile of newspapers on the floor. The masthead read “The Chaser”. I picked up a copy and took it into my office along with the lunch I had just purchased. It was hard for me to eat lunch as my sides were splitting at the laugh out loud fake and silly news and irreverence of this newspaper. These pages which contained enough blasphemy and defamation to have even the Divine Court sweating with anxiety. Nothing was sacred to The Chaser.

This troupe of white blokes who put together the newspaper, many graduates of the prestigious Sydney Grammar School, were the funniest bunch of private school d!ckheads to hit the comedy scene. Their humour was so juvenile that you wonder whether they were still in their St Ives Prep School. I was laughing myself silly and so loudly that my boss, who was in a conference with a client in the adjacent office, had to enter my office and politely tell me to shut the f#ck up.

Years later I noticed The Chaser were on ABC TV with some ridiculous anti-news show called CNNNN. It really was the staff undergrad university reviews were made of – pranks, toilet humour and irreverent interviews with clergy. It was so stupidly predictable yet it made me laugh.

After 9/11, I wasn’t in the mood to laugh much. Countries that shared my faith were being bombed by countries that shared my culture. The West had declared a War On Terror, though everyone knew it was a war on certain kinds of Islam and Muslims. In Australia, it was a war on just about anyone who was deemed Muslim. This time, The Chaser used juvenile humour to declare a War On Everything.

My young step-daughter was affected by the venom thrown at her and people of her faith by the likes of John Howard, Pauline Hanson, Andrew Bolt, Paul Sheehan and other persons off dubious credibility. Her only relief was sitting with me and her mum on a Wednesday night and tuning into The Chaser. We laughed as Osama bin Ladin videos were shown with stupid subtitles declaring a jihad on everyone from Bronwyn Bishop to Justin Bieber. We found it hilarious when Chas would put on a fake beard and a long white robe and interview a terror suspect out on bail. One of our favourite skits was their fake reality TV show The Biggest Muslim. You can still watch it on YouTube.

The Chaser kept so many of my mob sane by lampooning and ridiculing the powers that demonised us – John Howard, Tony Abbott, Philip Ruddock and many more. Even Sheik Taj El-Din Hamid Hilaly, the infamous “cat meat” mufti, didn’t escape Chaser-style pranking. It was all serious fun designed to remind us of how stupid we were to believe the paranoia and prejudice we took for granted.

In 2019 I moved to Perth and found myself working in a toxic environment. In the afternoon I would drive home laughing my head off listening to a podcast of The Chaser afternoon show on Sydney’s Triple-M. By the time I had driven from Mandurah to Rockingham, I was in stitches. After seven hours in such a depressing workplace, The Chaser were the perfect antidepressant.

While I was in Perth, the Perth Comedy Festival invited The Chaser to perform live on stage. It was a two hour show with an intermission.

Afterwards, the boys set up a stall outside the theatre where you could buy merchandise and have your photo taken with the stars, among them a grumpy Charles Firth and some tall blonde dude who looked like an actor in Home & Away.

So it was with high expectations that last week a friend and I went along to watch The Chaser at the Enmore Theatre as part of the Sydney Comedy Festival. This was a condensed show (only one hour) and the boys looked very tired. Their audience (including me) were also exhausted thanks to all that Omicron crap.

I hate writing critical reviews. I know how hard artists work, Comedy is tough even when you’re a seasoned comedian with a massive reputation. I’ve been backstage with Nazeem Hussain before a show and watched him pacing the floor nervously rehearsing his lines and gestures. But honestly, the worst thing I can say about The Chaser on this night is that they were very tired and one hour wasn’t enough time to flesh out their comedic argument. Their performance was brave and valiant, reminding me of former Australian cricket captain Alan Border scoring a century with severe injuries.

So much political satire consists of “in jokes” designed to give you a warm feeling inside as if you are laughing with the intelligentsia. This wasn’t The Chaser. Even a political novice would have understood the jokes. Some skits involved a strong degree of audience participation. I felt part of the performance, not just a spectator.

The highlight for me was watching Mark Humphries skewer the former head pastor of Hillsong. Sheer genius.

Perhaps the best praise for The Chaser came from an American lass who worked at Elizabeth’s Bookstore in Newtown. I went there to see if I could pick up some old copies of The Chaser magazine. “You’ll find them in the Australiana section,” she told me.

Why put them there when they should be in the humour section?

“Seriously, these guys aren’t just comedy,” the Yankee bookworm explained. “They’re an Australian cultural institution.”

I’m sure my step-daughter would agree.

POLITICS: How much brain power does one need to vote for Fred Nile?

Why is Fred Nile's self-styled Christian Democratic Party running 9 candidates for the Lower House seat of Bradfield? Maybe because the average human brain has 9 times the amount of power as the average CDP brain.

Certainly whoever came up with the following questionnaire didn't have much grey matter to play with.

The most important political (as opposed to theological) issue for the CDP is affirming that Jesus Christ is the son of God. The New Testament may call upon us to render to Caeser what is owed to Caeser, but Fred wants us to render all to his CDP's theocratic dogma.

Then there is Fred Nile's reference to "brave Israel". We need to back it even if it means "blockading Iran". And what dorm should this blockade take? Perhaps the kind of blockade which the people of Bethlehem currently enjoy?

But the most hilarious is Fred's call for free "4G" mobile calls and free data. Fred's really up with the technology. No doubt Fred will soon change his mind when he finds out just how much more widespread porn will become.

Still, all this does raise an interesting question for neurological research - just how little of one's brain is required to vote for any one of the nine CDP candidates in the Bradfield ballot?

REVIEW: Once Were Racists: My Years as a Teenage Blasphemer ...

It's hard not to sympathise with the plight of young Kuranda Seyfi Seyit. The poor fellow failed to secure a seat on Auburn Council, despite expecting to receive the bulk of Turkish voters' support. Making matters worse for himself, Mr Seyit spat the dummy and blamed his loss on a cabal of kebab meat manufacturers and committee members of the Auburn Gallipoli Mosque, accusing the latter of being anti-secular. He even took his allegations to the ABC, and made his own party look ... well ... not exactly Muslim-friendly. Not a great look in a local government area that has the highest concentration of Muslims of any local government area in the country.

The disappointed Council candidate is npw trying his hand at book reviews. Writing in the third edition of his Aussie Mossie newspaper, aptly named in honour of a now-defunct blog of yours trully, Mr Seyit applies his skills in literary criticism to a certain irreverent memoir. His conclusion? That the author is a BLASPHEMER ...

This book [is] by novice writer Irfan Yusuf ... However, after forcing myself to read the book I found it irreverent, blasphemous and racist especially towards Turks and Lebanese ...

(Click here to read the full review on page 16.)

Wow! Ayatollah Seyfi has issued a fatwa against me for blasphemy!! What will happen to me now? Will Seyfi lead a bunch of blokes in a public stoning? It all sounds like something out of Monty Python ...

Still, who am I to complain about a review that is trully out of this world?

IRAN: Maz Jobrani's serious reflections on Iran ...

Maz Jobrani is an American comedian of Iranian extraction who has toured with the Axis of Evil Comedy Tour.

He has also visited Australia.

Here are his personal reflections about the current situation in Iran ...

Dear Friends,

The recent events in Iran have had me glued to the TV, the internet and anything else that can give me updates on what is going on in the country of my birth. When I was 6 years old in Iran, the revolution of '78-'79 happened. I remember having to have our lights off by a certain time for curfew and how the police would drive by and flash their lights into our homes to make sure we weren't causing any trouble. I also remember one time running into our basement when we heard gunfire coming form a protest close to our home. At the time I was a kid and had no idea what was going on. I just thought it was cool to be hanging with my mom and family in the dark in the basement. For a 6 year old it was an adventure - like being in the Bat Cave.

30 years later I am being bombarded with images and clips from the protests in Iran that remind me of my youth. As someone who is not in the country and watching from overseas I must say that I am emboldened by what the people of Iran are doing these days. No proof has come out to show that the election was actually stolen, but the obvious signs do point to voter fraud. In breaking it down on some of my shows I've been saying that it seems in a country of 70 million people, Ahmadinejad got 75 million votes. Voter fraud? Divine intervention? You be the judge.

Anyway, I am writing this e-mail to express my solidarity with those within the country struggling to have their voices heard and their votes counted. It has been too long that the people of Iran have had to live like 5 year olds being monitored by "adults" who tell them what to wear, how to act and what they can and cannot do. The last time I was in Iran was just over 10 years ago and I remember leaving my mother country feeling depressed. I remember coming back to the US and making sure I appreciated the freedoms that we have here. I remember thinking that the people of the world should be guaranteed these basic freedoms which do not exist in Iran.

I hope that you will keep this struggle in your mind and support them in any way you can. I have changed the image on all my facebook and myspace accounts to the image attached here. Please do support by at least using this image on your facebook and myspace pages. I also know that many peaceful rallies are taking place around the world in support of this movement. If you have the time please do join in these marches.

Last, but not least here are a few links that I found interesting and helpful:

1. This video comes from Iran where at night the reformists are yelling "God is Great" in support of the movement. The woman speaking on the video breaks down towards the end and she keeps asking "where is this?" Responding to herself "This is my country Iran." It's actually very moving if you can have a farsi speaking friend translate.

[I think the translation is as follows (this isn't mine by the way; I found it next to the YouTube video).

Tonight the sound of God is Greater can be heard louder and louder than previous nights
Where is this?! Where is this place where everything has been blocked?
Where is this place where people are just shouting the name of God?
Where is this place where the sound of God is Greater can be heard louder and louder?
Everyday Im just waiting to see if there will be more and louder voices at nights?
My body trembles
...and I wonder if God trembles too?
Where is this where weve been imprisoned so innocently?
Where is this where no one gives us a helping hand?!
Where is this place, where we are getting our voices heard worldwide through our silence?
Where is this place where the blood of its young people is shed on the streets..., where people stand and pray on their blood?
Where is this place where its people are named Gangsters & Thugs?!
Where is this?
This is Iran. This is my land and yours!
This is Iran]

2. This video is a Brazilian expert on Iran who breaks the situation down very well.

3.
This last one is a song that a friend of mine put together. It has some explicit lyrics, but I hope you enjoy.

All the best,

Maz

REFLECTION/FILM: What’s that idiot doing?

I have a terrible habit of watching the same movie many times. If it’s a silly comedy, and if I take a liking to it, don’t be surprised if I would have already seen it at least 5 times within the first 12 months of having watched it. And don’t be surprised if I’ve memorised some of its more memorable gags.

It’s a habit I developed from childhood when video cassette recorders first came onto the market. It was around this time that we learned it was possible to record shows and movies shown on the TV. The vast majority of our video cassettes were of Indian movies. Fittingly, the first movie we had recorded from the TV also was an Indian movie. Well, kind of.

Peter Sellers’ The Party was played over and over again in our house. Sellers starred as Hrundi V. Bakshi, a bumbling Indian actor imported to Hollywood to play a soldier of the British Raj fighting (as luck would have it) in Afghanistan. At least the area on the set looked like Afghanistan, until Bakhshi accidentally blew it up while strapping up his sandals.

After being sacked from the movie, Bakshi somehow manages to score an invitation to a party hosted at the home of the magnate who owns the studio where the explosions took place. Sellers’ Indian accent sounds to me like a stereotypical American attempt to mimic the Indian accent.

His behaviour, dress and mannerisms (he’s even shown playing sitar at home) is such that you’d expect Indo-Pakistanis to be most peeved. But my memory is of my father and Indo-Pak uncles laughing heartily at Sellers’ accent, not to mention his awkward antics at the party. One of their favourite scenes was when he spoiled a gorgeous song whilst searching for a toilet. Perhaps my uncles appreciated that this party was Bakshi’s first such gathering, and they could relate to an Indian being marginalised by people because of his accent, his smiling clumsiness and his attempts to fit into any conversation he can find, all the while strictly avoiding a glass of wine. And they would have enjoyed the fact that, by the end of the party, it was Bakshi who was the only person (apart from the French actress he befriended at the party) that remained in one piece.

Perhaps they also realised that, in reality, The Party is less a spoof of Indians than of the American high society of the time. On the one hand, there is the hostess of the party who is happy to have an exotic Indian man along to the same dinner where she will also have Russian musicians and dancers performing - remember that this was during the heart of the Cold War! On the other hand, the majority of the guests as well as the host treat Bakshi with disdain. Even the daughter of the hosts, who appears with her friends later in the movie along with an elephant painted with hippy slogans that offend Bakshi sensibilities, soon bends over backwards to placate him buy having her friends scrub the poor beast.

A fair few of the scenes from The Party have been mimicked in other movies in both India and the United States. The Naked Gun 2½ featured a scene involving Frank Drebin (played by Leslie Nielsen) flipping a piece of food into Winnie Mandela’s headscarf. Meanwhile Arjun Singh (played by Amitabh Bachchan) manages to lose his shoe in some water in the Bollywood classic Namak Halal.

There are many classic gags and scenes I grew up with and whose broader significance (presuming they had any) I couldn’t appreciate until now. You can watch some of them below while I get ready to hit the sack. It’s 3:15am.

COMEDY: Herald-Sun writer exposes marsupial jihad

Writing in the Sunday Herald-Sun, Eleni Hale desperately clings to straws in an effort to find a jihadi angle to the bushfire tragedy in Victoria.

In an article headed Jihadists revel in our misery, Hale reports as follows ...
Terror watchdogs said fundamentalists had blogged on websites across the globe, applauding the lives lost and destruction.

Senior analyst at SITE Intelligence Group Adam Raisman said they were posting pictures of burnt homes and devastated victims and "taking joy in the scenes".
Who is this SITE Intelligence Group? You can find out more about this non-government profit-making enterprise here. SITE takes a fair wack of its work from MEMRI, an organisation which seems to have its own political and sectarian agenda.

Hale then revels in putting her discovery to one bushfire victim:
Bushfires victims said they were stunned.

"We're minding our own business and trying to cope with all this and they are celebrating our suffering," said Denise McCann who lost her home in the Kinglake blaze.

So one bushfire victim becomes "bushfire victims". Maybe basic numerical skills aren't a prerequisite for employment at some newspapers. And maybe tabloid editors shouldn't waste victims' (or should that be victim's?) time with such nonsense.

And who are the jihadists that are revelling in our collective misery? Again, when evidence is required, plural suddenly becomes singular:
One jihadist wrote: "It would be an act of revenge for Australian's participation in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq."
One "jihadist"? Where? On what site? In what language? When? Is Hale citing Osama bin Ladin typing this from his cave? Or is this "jihadist" a 15 year old kid writing on this online chat room?

Already Hale's article has been picked up by a variety of websites known for their sensible and unprejudiced reporting and analysis.

But it seems the Herald-Sun's readers don't share Hale's obsession with finding the jihadist angle to everything.

This is an unnecessary and dangerously incendiary article. How stupid and pointless to stir up anti-Muslim sentiment at a time when emotions are running high and there's so much good will and community support to be celebrated.

Don't fall for this people. The general Muslim community want nothing to do with these lunatics. As arsonists walk amongst our community, idiots walk amongst theirs.

Watch out for Eleri Hale's next article where she exposes Koala Sam's efforts to recruit other koalas on a massive marsupial jihad mission for al-Qaeda and JI. I've already received a photo taken by the SITE Intelligence Group of the devious un-Australian extremist fundamentalist jihadist creature just as it was about to film its pre-suicide video will.

My suggestion to Hale is that she stick to writing articles about Oktoberfest.
