COMMENT: The neo-Con fantasy comes unstuck

Here’s an example of the kind of fruitloop reasoning that makes so many American conservatives such a laughing stock:

Are the Arabs capable of democracy? And if so, can Americans be the agents of their transformation? The answer, of course, is that no one knows. The lack of a single democratic Arab government gives grounds for skepticism. The claim that something in Arab culture makes it resistant to democracy cannot be refuted until the first Arab democracy comes into being. (Joshua Muravchik, former resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute)

Here's a simple bullshit-free translation: Sorry, sand-niggers. Your raghead culture is inferior to ours. You can’t have democracy unless we become the agents of your change. Without us, you won’t get anywhere. In the meantime, we'll blame your culture for shoving down your throats dictators that you hate but that guarantee us access to cheap oil.

Ordinary Egyptians took a mere 18 days to show what a load of crap this thinking was. And who opposed their peaceful uprising? Why none other than a large number of the same American conservatives. Funny that.

UPDATE I: Here's a few choice words from an Australian of Egyptian heritage as reported in the Sun-Herald today:
... Nour Eldin Tarraf, a 35-year-old orthodontist who moved to Sydney from Cairo five years ago, said the real threat to Egypt's prosperity was not religion. ''I'm a Muslim who grew up in a building that was half-Muslim, half-Christian - no one cared,'' said Mr Tarraf, of the Sydney Egyptian Revolution Solidarity Committee.

''The real problem is corruption. It infiltrated every rank of Egyptian society, and changing that will not be easy.''
UPDATE II: Even those who sold Mubarak to the nation are suddenly trying to reinvent themselves. The Washington Post recently published a piece about the editor of a pro-Mubarak (as in state-owned) newspaper:

For now, Osama Saraya is still editor in chief of al-Ahram, the state-run Egyptian newspaper that has long been a deferential mouthpiece for the president and his ruling party.
But his main preoccupation seems to be reinvention.
Portraits of Hosni Mubarak no longer adorn his office walls (one is stashed under the television, others behind a curtain). Photographs of Saraya with top government officials have been turned upside down.
It was only last week that Saraya was denouncing the chaos caused by pro-democracy demonstrators. His editorial in al-Ahram on Sunday carried a very different tune.
"A salutation to the revolution and respect to its youth," Saraya wrote. "The corrupt in Egypt were only a few that led to the destruction of the country, and their era is gone now.''

POLITICS: Oh my God!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If someone had told me a decade ago that my politics would be this ...

My Political Views
I am a left moderate social libertarian
Left: 3.61, Libertarian: 2

Political Spectrum Quiz

... there's a possibility I would have shot them and/or myself.

Or perhaps I never was as conservative as I thought. Was I always a feel-good liberal hippy only interested in sowing the seeds of love?

Was I really only ever selectively conservative. Perhaps it's time to start writing the political sequel to this ...

UPDATE I: One of my admirers sent in this balanced comment for moderation:

The women of the world want you to kill yourself so that there is absolutely no danger of any of the sisterhood being sexually abused by you anymore. The test-tube scientists of the world want you to kill yourself so that there is no danger of your flawed genetic material being passed onto some new life form. Irfan it is well known that any opinion you might temporarily hold is purely the result of your own delusions and the varying effects of psychiatric pharmaceuticals. Existing as the most grotesque fat black freak in Australia does not entitle you to have a political opinion. Australian humans are entitled to any political opinion. You are not.

Thank you, Douglas Darby!

UPDATE II: Another message for moderation.

It's sad that your political views mirror your life situation as a nasty little social outcast, vicious gossip and a dependent needy lonely screw-up. It's not too late to give yourself an abortion with a massive overdose of psychiatric medication and an attention-seeking self-immolation. Your self-hatred and dislike of all humanity is the reason you continue to torture yourself and all Australians by continuing to exist. You are not going to get any happier by eating yourself to death so just have some dignity for the first time in your sad and lonely life and end it.

I love you too, Doug.

MUSIC: A classic from Australian band Matt Finish ...

I used to listen to this melancholy Matt Finish song when I was in high school. Matt Moffitt had one of the best voices in the business. There's an excellent orchestral accompanyment to this recording. Sadly he passed away in 2003.

EVENT: Freebie!!!!!

Many years ago, the legendary Chrissie Amphlet sang about touching herself. It wasn't exactly the most religious song on the planet.

And Once Were Radicals isn't exactly the most religious book on the planet. Still, I won't be touching myself at the upcoming Sydney Writers Festival. If this photo is anything to go by ...

... I prefer punching myself.

Anyway, click here for some details about a lunchtime freebie. Or if you're too friggin lazy, here ae the details, along with some editorial adjustments.
Irfan Yusuf in Conversation
Event 238

What do you get when you mix Indian ancestry, Pakistani birth, Urdu language and culture, Muslim religion and a fair dinkum strayn accent? [Ed: certainly not Andrew Bolt!!] How does a middle-class kid from John Howard’s electorate became convinced he should die for the Muslim cause? [Ed: probably by reading Piers Akerman columns which are enough to make anyone slightly suicidal.] Who knew being a teenage Islamo-fascist could be so funny?

Irfan Yusuf shares his hilarious journey into and then out of political Islam.

When
Saturday, May 23 2009
13:00 - 14:00

Where
Sydney Philharmonia Choir Studio
Pier 4/5, Hickson Road

BLOG: How tendentious can you get?

The Sydney Morning Herald today ran my reflections on heavy metal music, moderating blog remarks and Soviet-style Camden folk who wish to dictate to the Anglican church to whom it can and cannot sell its property. On that note, readers are now urged to stop reading and start rocking ...

Check out this Bollywood-style mimer ...

... and here's the real thing ...

UPDATE I: Poor Tim Blair is most upset with my tribute to his blog-moderating patterns. After mentioning Daniel Pipes' futile call to for all "respectable" newspapers to cease publishing my "tendatious" writings, Blair gets to the heart of the issue, avoiding any personal and ad hominem attacks. For Blair, the real issue isn't my being allegedly "two-faced, five-chinned" or being "Mesopotamia Fats". The real issue is that I am a "very bitter person". And Blair's ultimate evidence for this is the words of a failed (and extremly bitter) Greens Local Government Candidate. Blair also complains about my light moderating workload. Funny that. For someone who has his blog hosted by a newspaper claiming to be Sydney's top-selling paper and owned by one of the world's largest media organisations, Blair only managed 9 comments as at 3:30pm. Still, at least Blair has News Limited staff to assist him.

UPDATE II: Jeremy has some fun with Bolt & Blair here. Sounds like a possible name for a movie ...

UPDATE III: As at 11:15pm, Mr Blair's blogpost has 13 comments. That's an almost 50% increase! Anyway, I'd better get back to watching that SBS documentary on the operation of Israel's rabbinical courts ...

MUSIC: She Will Be Loved ...

The amazing Kate Ceberano has a new album entitled so much beauty. She is an amazing live performer. For what it's worth, I last saw Kate perform last year at the Sydney Jazz Festival before a large crowd at Darling Harbour.

Click the arrow to watch her do wonders with this old track.

MUSIC: Another Kate

OK, I admit it. I'm a huge fan of that awesome singer and song writer Kate Ceberano. But there's another Kate who is not as well-known but who certainly deserves a mention.

For a short time only, you can click here to listen to and download a wonderful acoustic track from Kate Grealy.

Interestingly, much of Kate's music is inspired by her travels through the Balochistan province of Pakistan. You can read more about her experiences at her blog which can be found here.

Kate is a local of that gorgeous border town Albury, and has been writing songs since she was 16.
